About the salon

Barometer Hair Co. opened in 2017 in a narrow Paddington shopfront that had been a picture framer for thirty years. Marisa had spent eleven years in city salons doing careful work that fell apart the moment a client walked out into February. That was the whole problem. Brisbane is not a dry city, and a finish that only survives an air-conditioned room is not really a finish, it is a photograph.

So we built the salon around the weather instead. Every consultation starts with two questions nobody had been asking us: what does your hair do at eight in the morning between your front door and the car, and how many minutes are you honestly going to give it at home. Then we cut to that answer. We check every cut dry and in movement, not just wet and combed flat, because wet hair lies about where the weight is sitting. We tone for daylight on the ridge rather than for the lights above the mirror. We only recommend a smoothing treatment when the hair in front of us will hold it, and we say so out loud when it will not.

The turning point came in the summer of 2019, when a run of humid weeks emptied the diary and people started cancelling because there was, in their words, no point. We stopped taking that personally and started teaching it instead. Everyone began going home with the two minute version of their own finish and one product that would survive the walk to the car. Rebookings climbed, and the salon has been close to full ever since.

Nine years on there are five of us. Marisa still cuts four days a week. Bec runs colour and has taken on most of the correction work that arrives from elsewhere. Anh does the smoothing treatments and has the steadiest hands in the room. Jules keeps the diary honest, which in this trade is a craft of its own. Kai is in the third year of an apprenticeship and is already better at a blow-dry than most of us were at five years.

We are not a quiet salon and we are not a loud one. We tell you the price before you sit down, we tell you when something will not work, and we book realistic time so nobody is being rushed at four o'clock on a Saturday. Bring us the hair you have, in the weather you have. We will handle it.
